He's going to produce in the NFL. When you can make plays like he did with heart and determination, not to mention the size and speed, it's going to translate on the next level.

The Cowboys will not have a shot at him late in Round Two. So either they have no options at LT or Safety when they come up at #27 or they trade back up into the early part of Round Two to grab him.

Since he played in a Pro style offense at Notre Dame I think he's going to be more 'game ready' than a lot of the WR's coming out this year who are not accustomed to running precision routes. If there are a bunch of teams thinking he can step right in and play the slot WR or maybe even win the #2 job in training camp he's a goner in round one.

The WR position is always trickier come draft time.

For the last two seasons I have been trying to like Martellus Bennett as a fun loving kid who sometimes sticks his foot in his mouth and doesn't realize ALL of his actions whether on or off the field reflect on the Cowboys organization.

I think it's reasonable to say I go back and forth with him. For a while I like him and he's just silly. Other times he will Tweet something that is so ignorant or tasteless that it makes me wish I didn't see it.

Recently the latter happened. So before I even saw this interview with him I was about ready for the Cowboys to trade him away for some draft value and not think twice about it.

Now after seeing this interview I am all for the trade and I hope it gets done ASAP...

So one of the top three offenses in the league should start doing things differently so you can get yours?

Not many teams have two Pro Bowl caliber Tight Ends? Jason Witten is a proven commodity Marty B, you are not even close to that and the sooner you realize this and start focusing on football more then you can even begin talking like this.

Work hard all week and then you need the QB to throw you a bone on Sunday? As if we all haven't heard the stories or seen the video of Romo and Witten having to direct you on where to line up or what route you were supposed to have run.

There is even video of Bobby Carpenter making fun of you on a Special Teams play because of the two options to block, left or right, you didn't know your assignment.

Let's be real here. You dropped a bunch of wide open passes last season. You ran the wrong route against the Panthers (you were supposed to fade back to the end line/back pylon and instead you posted up two yards into the End Zone). Your owner has even made recent negative comments about your professionalism.

There was a moment for me last summer when I realized this kid may not have enough passion for the game to ever reach his potential. As a blogger I was closely following all the media things he was doing last summer. UStream. He was using this service while at training camp. At one point during one the sessions he revealed that he didn't know the Cowboys were in the NFC East. Do we need to know much more than that?

Bottom line. Martellus Bennett doesn't get it. He didn't get it at Texas A & M and the Cowboys were hoping they could mold him into a player who was all about the game of football. You can blame his age on some things, but that's just an excuse. After two years of being a professional athlete he's still all about potential.

And now he's ready to start talking publicly about the coaches doing some things differently in the offense so he has more opportunities. Between him and Roy Williams needing some much extra help maybe the Cowboys should hire two offensive coordinators and run two different offenses on Sunday. They can alternate every other series. Maybe Kitna can QB the one where Marty B and Roy are the guys getting the football all the time. LOL.

Just another day as we wait for the 2010 NFL Draft.

Report: Sensabaugh has interest from other teams

While I think the Cowboys are looking to sign Gerald Sensabaugh to some long term I am a little worried about him taking visits to the other teams, read here.

No visits have been set up but Gerald Sensabaugh has received interest from three or four teams, according to his agent, Kevin Conner.

The Cowboys put the second-round tender on the restricted free agent safety, which would pay him $2.8 million in 2010. If the Cowboys chose not to match an offer, they would receive a second-round pick as compensation.

On the eve of free agency, Conner said Sensabaugh's wish was to sign a long-term deal with the Cowboys.

The Cowboys can match any offers out there, but I hate when a team puts itself into that situation because then you are backed up into a deal where you really didn't set the parameters up to begin with.

I also heard some rumors yesterday that the Cowboys were looking into going after the Colts RFA Safety Antoine Bethea. This would cost the Cowboys their 1st round pick in the draft.

If the Cowboys choose to let Sensabaugh go they get a 2nd rounder back. But then they would lose their 1st if they do after Bethea and the Colts don't match it. These guys are both versatile Safeties who can play either spot which is what every defense needs these days.

The other options out there besides the draft as far as Safety goes is OJ Otagwe who is a RFA from the Rams. He's coming off of shoulder surgery and the Rams gave him the lowball offer. The Cowboys would not lose any picks should they sign him and the Rams don't match the deal. Now there are also reports that the Rams are looking to sign him long term anyway so they would match anything the Cowboys send his way.

The Cowboys at both Safety spots are looking at some very interesting scenarios these days.

The last guy I am taking this kind of advice from is Mark Schlereth...

Here's the deal. I watch Schlereth all the time on NFL Live. He does an excellent job in analyzing the game and he knows his business from all of his experience on the field.

But the man has had 112,000 surgeries on his elbow, shoulder, knees, hands, fingers, toe bones, ankle bones, eye bones, ear bones and every other kind of bone in the body.

Maybe if he spent a little more time doing some recreational sports in the offseason to loosen up the body he might only have 32,000 surgeries to reference back to while on ESPN.

Cromartie is a Jet...were the Cowboys interested?

Reports are out that the Cowboys were interested in trading for Antonio Cromartie who was shipped to the Jets last night, read here.

A league source tells us that eight teams were interested in the former first-round pick.

One of the teams was the Cowboys, whose head coach was the defensive coordinator in San Diego when Cromartie had the best year of his career.

Cromartie has claimed that the switch from man coverage to zone after Wade Phillips and then Ted Cottrell left caused the dip in Cromartie's play, and that he'll thrive in a 3-4 scheme premised on man-to-man coverage.

I could definitely see the Cowboys being interested. That deal of a third rounder in 2011 was far from a steep price either so you have to wonder why the Cowboys could not make this happen if indeed they were interested.

And if Cromartie had come to the Cowboys would he have been inserted into the lineup as a starter?

Both Newman and Jenkins were Pro Bowlers last season and I doubt Cromartie would have kept his mouth shut if he was traded to a team to become the Nickel CB.

Hatcher cool about Tender, Spears not so much

When the backup gets a better Restricted Free Agent Tender offer than the starter you can expect these results.

The Cowboys will pay backup defensive linemen Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher more money than they pay Spears. Bowen and Hatcher each received second-round tenders worth $1.759 million.

When asked about it, Spears said, "Tough man! That's the way it is, man, it's business."

You have to wonder if the Cowboys were sending a message to Spears in terms of what they offered him.

Yeah, the message was definitely sent to Spears.

But here's what Jerry Jones said at the combine last week about some of his linemen: "I think that we've got some guys in Stephen Bowen and got some guys in Hatcher that are going to be pushing to get on that field more. Those are the guys that you want to see go on up the ladder. But specifically, I’m looking at guys like that. Hatcher won’t have the [recovering from knee surgery] that he had last year. So he ought to be able to get around to running this spring and we ought to expect that of him."

Spears is ok. But he's not a playmaker by any means. I think the Cowboys just want to add even more playmakers to this defense. And I am all for it and I think Bowen is actually the guy that's going to be the one who shines once he gets his shot.

The fellas at NFL Live got to talking about the Roy Williams stuff after the buzz was created from Jerry's recent comments.

But the most important thing I heard in here was the stuff Chris Mortensen was talking about...

I have no idea if Mort is correct in his thinking, but I really hope he is and I do hope that player comes from the draft.

There are some guys in this thing that could become very dynamic weapons in the slot should the Cowboys be looking to do so.

Here are a few names: Dexter McCluster from Ole Miss, Mardy Gilyard from Cincy, Golden Tate from Notre Dame, Jordan Shipley from Texas, Jacoby Ford from Clemson, Antonio Brown from Central Michigan.

All of those would be good fits.

I have to admit I was not happy with his 40 time of 4.56, but he's a very dynamic punt returner and could be a nice addition to the offense as a bubble screen guy and a slot WR.

With his slow 40 time he may just fall all the way to the third round. If he's there in the early 3rd I would not mind the Cowboys moving up in that round to go after him.

Will there be changes on the Defensive Line?

A couple of days ago Jerry Jones made some very intriguing comments about making changes to the team. One of those areas he referenced was the Defensive Line so I guess we should really start looking at some of the following guys are prospects for that #27 draft spot...

Suh and McCoy will be long gone by the time the Cowboys are on the clock unless they make a spectacular trade.

Dan Williams, Jared Odrick and Brian Price are all good candidates though.

And what about Terrence Cody? Wade says that he has played with all kinds of different NT's in his NFL coaching days and this kid would only be a 2 down player. If the Cowboys do draft him it could mean that Jay Ratliff is finally making the move back to DE.

The Cowboys have until Thursday to slap the tender offers on their three RFA lineman (Spears, Hatcher and Bowen) so we will know more about how serious Jerry really was about making changes to this unit.

Tashard Choice will NOT request a trade

Tashard still talking about being unsatisfied

Since the story broke yesterday about Tashard Choice making some comments about his frustration with his role on the Cowboys most fans have been discussing the issue.

Some are understanding, but would rather he make his feeling be known to the Cowboys and not to the media.

Some don't care that he's talking publicly. Some think he has no basis for his argument. Some are going overboard and want him traded immediately because they think he's going to become the next Terrell Owens.

Here's my take. I understand why he feel the way he does, but I don't agree that he needs to tell anyone but his close friend and family or the Cowboys in a sit down meeting about his future.

In this meeting the Cowboys could come out in three seconds and tell him to shut up and play out his contract and they would have every right to do so because they really hold all the cards here. They could also tell him they feel he's right about his views and they are going to make sure he's more involved this season.

In the last 24 hours he's talked to the San Antonio Express. Then he made a comment to me on Twitter. Then he also spoke to Calvin Watkins today about the situation. Was that enough?

No. He also went on The Ben and Skin Show this afternoon to repeat his feelings...

Tashard Choice on Ben and Skin - March 1

You won't hear anything really new in the audio that you haven't read if you read the other stuff mentioned.

But I think hearing someone actually speak by having the audio is always more powerful and maybe more enlightening.

As I iistened this I decided halfway thru I would be going back immediately and listening to it again for a second time.

Why not comb over it and see if you can come to any conclusions or come up with a theory to toss around about the situation as it will be moving forward from here.

Here's something I would lik to throw out. And something I will be asking him thru Twitter after I am done posting this.

Is all of this grumbling from Tashard a precursor to him requesting a trade from the Cowboys?

He says he's happy, but not satisfied. He says he really hasn't heard anything about any trades from his agent, but he says he knows that other teams want him. And he says that 'it's still looming'. That looming thing was a little weird to me. What's looming? The window for him to request this trade? The time frame where he could do this so the Cowboys get some draft picks for him?

Very interesting that he's now willing to talk more than once about this subject within the last 24 hours.

Tashard: 'I'm happy, but I am not satisfied'

I don't want the Cowboys to lose a talented young player like this.

Sometimes you just have too many good players at one position and in the 'what's best for the team' theory it comes to a point where the team makes a decision to trade a guy in hopes of getting back some value for him instead of him just sitting back as an insurance policy.

In saying that I am ok with a trade. But I would like to see the Cowboys trade Marion Barber, not Tashard Choice.

Barber is the guy with all those carries on his frame. And he's making a nice bit of money too. I just don't see him staying healthy in the future and I know he's not going to get any faster. I guess I am saying that his best days are behind him at this time.

Don't hate the playa, hate the game.

In this case the game is the NFL and it's business.

Tashard Choice's frustration beginning to show

If you have been watching the Cowboys play football for the past two seasons then you know that Tashard Choice is a very good football player who deserves more playing time.

But there is only one football to go around. So it's tough to find touches for him unless Marion Barber and Felix Jones are hurt.

That last sentence seemed like a reasonable thought for the past two seasons. But what about 2010? That's the big question right now for the Dallas Cowboys.

Is it time that Tashard Choice moves into the #1 or #2 spot on the RB depth chart?

Tashard had some very interesting, and maybe some will say controversial, comments today when speaking with Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express, read here.

Tashard Choice said Sunday he would welcome a trade from the Dallas Cowboys if it meant a chance to show he can be a No. 1 running back.

"I love being in Dallas, but I just know I should be playing more," Choice said during an appearance at the Dallas Cowboys Grilling Products FanFest at the San Antonio Events Center. "When we lose and I don't get much of a chance, I'm sick."

That is nothing more than a very competitive person just wanting to do what he's loved to do since he was a little kid - Play Football!

It has to be frustrating sitting on the sidelines all game watching Felix and MBIII going in and out of the game. I get it completely. And I get it even more when we all saw how good this kid is when he did get his opportunities to play while they were out with injuries in the past.

"All I look for is to help my team win, but there comes a time when you want more opportunities to run the football," Choice told the Express-News before Sunday's event. "It's nothing against the other backs, but I just know I can play. I just feel like I should get the ball more, that I should be in the offense more than I was last year."

Choice later told fans during a question-and-answer session "there are a lot of teams trying to get me" because "they think I can be their featured guy."

Of course there are teams out there who would love to acquire Tashard and make him their featured RB. But this is the exact reason the Cowboys don't want to let him go. Who wants to give away good football players? And even better is the idea that no one wants to give away good football players when they are an excellent insurance plan for two guys who have shown to get dinged up here and there.

Asked about his role as the trigger man in the Razorback formation, the Cowboys' version of the Wildcat, Choice suggested he thinks offensive coordinator Jason Garrett hasn't utilized it correctly.

"It's a cool formation," Choice said. "But when you don't have many plays coming from it, (opponents) know what you are running. (The Razorback) creates a lot of mismatches, but you have to have a wrinkle. You have to throw the ball. You have to run to both sides."

Choice has two years left on the contract he signed as a rookie in 2008.

"I'd love to stay here and have a major role," he said. "I can play, man. I love Barber. I love Felix. But I don't want to play only when they're hurt."

I wish these comments were not made publicly. If anything I would love for Tashard to voice his opinion privately to Jerry and Stephen. But I understand that he just wants to play ball. He knows he can do it and so do we.

And there are plenty out there who think he plays the game on a higher level than Marion Barber does these days. I am in that group of people.

Is he better than Felix? That's a much different story. Their games aren't as similar. Felix is a home run hitter because of his long speed so I won't go as far as saying Tashard should be getting more work than Felix next season.

But I do think he should be moved ahead of Marion Barber on the depth chart.

Myron Rolle gets a lot of publicity because his academic prowess combined with his football skill are such a rare combo.

If you are a Cowboys fan you should keep an eye on him because he could be targeted by the Cowboys this April...

I like how he's willing to play the deep Safety spot. He's either going to help his draft position a whole lot on Tuesday with a strong showing in the 40 or he's going to remain somewhere around the 2nd or 3rd round if he runs something average.

Most draft boards list him as a Strong Safety, but like most Safeties these days they are interchangeable between FS and SS depending on what day of the week it is.

Below this entry you will see some comments from Jerry that I like. He basically said that the players should not be sitting around thinking their jobs are safe after that beating in Minnesota and that there may be changes coming at the OL, DL and Safety positions.

Then you hear these comments and you shake your head, read here.

The question was posed to Jerry Jones as follows: Do you see Roy Williams not being a starter next year?

"No. No. I do not," the owner said. "No. A big no."

The double negative makes it convoluted in print, but Jones was affirming that Williams will continue to be among the Cowboys’ top two receivers when the 2010 season begins.

Head coach Wade Phillips said Saturday night that one news source had wrongly interpreted his Friday comments about getting more from Williams. Phillips was saying Williams and the team can do things differently to try to increase his impact, not that his starting job is up for grabs.

Phillips has stressed that the best players will play. The Cowboys see Williams as one of their two best receivers.

"He’s certainly got room for improvement, we all know that," Jones said. "He’s got technical things he can work on and improve."

Now you may agree with Jerry and think Roy will be the #2 WR when the season begins.

But there isn't any overwhelming evidence from what Roy has done here in his time to say he's so far ahead of anyone else on this roster that he could not possibly be challenged for his job.

Let's cut the BS here.

The guy is going to make a ton of money so the Cowboys are going to fit him into the offense no matter what it takes.

That's piss poor management. This is the equivalent to saying that you buy $500 tires for your car and then realize they don't fit the rims. So instead of using the tires you have or another set that are available, but are cheaper you will force those $500 tires on the rims and use them.

Don't look to blame anyone else next season when this offense is flat at times because Romo to Roy isn't working and you still keep calling up those plays time and time again. i can't imagine Jason Garrett or Tony Romo love hearing this stuff from Jerry.

Wade's comments being misinterpreted? Gimme a break. Stop trying to put a square peg into a round hole. If the guy is running around in Training Camp and he isn't looking like he's one of the best three WR's on the team then he should not play.

Jerry Jones says to look for changes!

Just talked to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and I'm working on a full story but here are the headlines.

Jones said the Cowboys would be mistaken to think their playoff win means they are getting close to the top. He said the blowout loss to Minnesota means they have a long way to go.

So he wants them as scared, uncomfortable and nervous going into the offseason as they were last year and thus said personnel changes are coming.
He said especially look for changes on the offensive line, defensive line and possibly safety.

Of course he also all but guaranteed a starter job for receiver Roy Williams.

I wonder if his is a hint that either Flozell Adams or Marc Colombo are going to be replaced by Doug Free.

With three RFA's at Defensive End I have been saying for weeks that those guys were not all assured of coming back to the team. i don't think Junior Savaii is a lock either to return as Ratliff's backup.

And it seems that Hamlin and Sensabaugh are looking at their starting spots right now and wondering if they will be back.

I like this approach by Jerry. Don't start acting like this team won the Super Bowl because they finally won a playoff game. That loss in Minny was embarrassing and unacceptable.

Jared Odrick is an interesting prospect at DE

The Cowboys Defensive Line rotation has been pretty solid over the past three seasons. Right now Jerry and Stephen Jones are mulling over some decisions at this very position because Marcus Spears, Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen are RFA's and it's going to be interesting to see if the Cowboys bring all of them back for 2010.

While watching the Senior Bowl practices earlier this year I saw a guy who just kept working harder than everyone else.

Jared Odrick from Penn State was not a dominating player, but he does look to have a very good upside for his NFL career because he's willing to work hard and I think he's versatile enough to move around in a Wade Phillips 34 defense.

I actually got a chance to call into the show later on after hearing this and ask those guys about whether or not Odrick would fit in Wade's scheme and whether or not he would be available for the Cowboys in 2nd round at the #59 spot. They agreed he could play DE for Wade, but they didn't think he would make it to that #59 slot.

Every year I come across a few players who just seem to get it and I watch them throughout their NFL career. I think Odrick will be on that list for sure.

Like every player coming into the NFL he has a lot of work to do before he settles down and we know what he will be as an NFL player. Should be interesting to see what kind of defense Odrick gets to play in at the next level.

If the Cowboys are going to draft a WR/RB in the 2010 NFL Draft I have on rule that must be followed - He has to return kicks/punts!

Checking out the NFL Combine today where RB/WR/QB's are working out and Antonio Brown from Central Michigan has caught my eye for sure. I knew about him from just looking over the WR who would be available this year, but this is the first time he's really stood out to me...

He's not a burner, but he looks quick enough and I doubt a 4.5 will keep him out of the NFL folks.

Plus he looks like he keeps his speed with pads on...

Antonio Brown makes plays and that's what I want to see on film.

And yes, he has the numbers in the return game that I must have if you want to be on my draft board, read here.

Right now I see some sites have him listing anywhere between the 3rd and 6th round.

Slot WR and kick return specialist for the next 4-8 years in the NFL.

Witten was highly regarded coming into the 2003 draft, but he wasn't a lock to become one of the best in the game, read here.

Hard work has helped him get to the status he's at right now. I have heard the story a gazillion times already about how the Cowboys were elated he was still on the board in the third round.

And in that article, blurbs on right, you will see a quote from Charlie Casserly that he didn't think there were any 'Jeremy Shockey's' in this draft. Ummm, no. There were guys who were better.

Dallas Clark and Witten have proven to be much more consistent than Shockey.

This is now Tony Romo's team. And it's a great thing.

Love the combine! Have no idea if anything this stuff being done will actually tell us if these players are good, but it gives us a look see at some freak athletes and introduces us to this year's draft class.

Yeah. I am taking Bulaga over Campbell. The problem is that Bulaga will be gone before the Cowboys get on the clock at the #27 spot. But this year they say there are a bunch of OT's that could develop into starters with some good coaching.

The Cowboys need to draft an offensive lineman in the early rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Bruce Campbell is sure doing all he can to make sure he isn't available at the #27 spot where the Cowboys pick in the first round..

He looks like he could be a tremendous pass blocker at the NFL level.

Mayock says he needs works on run blocking, but that's why the Cowboys pay coaches big money.

Someday Stephen Jones will be the guy making decisions for the Cowboys and in the last year he's made sure everyone knows that he's more than just Jerry's son.

Today he said something which could mean a whole lot or could mean nothing at all at the end of the day, read here.

Over the next few days, the Cowboys will discuss if there are any young players who have put themselves in position to push higher-priced veterans off the roster. Think back to Greg Ellis and Anthony Spencer from last season.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones won't discuss specific players. But he conceded that scenario could play out.

"I think it could ultimately happen,'' Jones said. "It hasn't been decided, but it could ultimately fall that way.

"I think we've got a lot of young players, if given the opportunity, would probably play better than most people think.''

You could determine which veteran players would be looking at losing their jobs. If you read this blog regularly you would know I think Ken Hamlin is definitely on this list. Whether it's Alan Ball or Michael Hamlin pushing him is the question.

Because of the money being paid to Roy Williams I don't think he's in jeopardy.

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams, who is guaranteed $12.9 million in bonuses and base salary this year, will have to compete to keep his starting job.
"We are going to play the best player, no matter what," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said when asked whether Patrick Crayton or Kevin Ogletree could beat out Williams.

Phillips has said it's up to the coaching staff to figure out how to best use Williams, who signed a five-year, $45 million extension the week after being traded to Dallas. Phillips reiterated Friday that he believes Williams can perform at a Pro Bowl level, as he did when he caught 82 passes for 1,310 yards for Detroit in 2006.

"I think a guy that has been a Pro Bowler like Roy, he's got to take part of it too," Phillips said. "Miles [Austin] has come so far that nobody knew he was going to be that good. He has to maintain being that good, and Roy has to get to that level again."

The problem is that Wade and company play the guy they think is the best option and some times it's obvious that to us fans that the guy they choose isn't the best option. So in essence Wade gave you an answer where he can't lose. He can always just say he thought Roy was the best option at the time.

Buehler didn't work much on placekicking last season, but he's been told to focus on field goals during the offseason. The Cowboys signed Conor Hughes to give Buehler some competition, but the best-case scenario would be for the elite kickoff specialist to expand his role.

"That would be a two-for-one deal for us," coach Wade Phillips said.

Ex-Cowboys kicker Chris Boniol was hired as a consultant to help Buehler improve to the point where the Cowboys would be comfortable relying on him to kick field goals. Phillips is optimistic that Buehler can make the necessary improvement because of the strong-legged kicker's determination.

"He’s obviously got the leg," Phillips said. "He hit some long ones in practice, because we only basically practiced him on the long ones. He hit a fair percentage of those, not where we want to be, but I think he can get there."

Boniol, who was interviewed by special teams coach Joe DeCamillis as well as Phillips and management, will work for the Cowboys on a part-time basis at least through training camp.

"Sometimes it’s the little things that maybe we don’t know or we didn’t teach him," Phillips said. "We’re hoping Boniol can help him in that area, and there’s a mental aspect too that Boniol has been through."

I want him to win the job as well.

Witten will be joined by fellow Pro Bowlers Vernon Davis (San Francisco), Joe Thomas (Cleveland) and Mario Williams (Houston) for the week long visit to the U.S. troops at military bases throughout the region.

Witten spoke with Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen and New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees about their trips to visit the military members, "and they told me it would change your life," Witten said.

"I think it's one of those things that the memories from that will last a lifetime," Witten said. "So many of those troops are such big football fans and Cowboys fans that I'm thrilled to be going over there and spending time with them to let them know how much we appreciate them."

That's a role model if I ever saw one kids!

Good answer, good answer!!! Hamlin isn't the worst Safety in the NFL and if he can promise me he's going to do what he did in 2007 then I would love to pay him $5.5 mil this season and keep him on the team.

But if he's going to give me what he's given me in 2008 and 2009 then he's not worth that money and he's not making enough happen from his position. Just imagine how much better this defense would be if every now and again he could tip a pass up in the air or come down with an interception on a deep pass.

Mayhew was clapping with his feet. That just about says it all. Roy wasn't worth all that the Cowboys gave up to get him and he's never going to get out from the dark cloud that insane trade has placed over him. it is what it is.

The Cowboys will be playing five preseason games this year, read here.

The Dallas Cowboys will play the Cincinnati Bengals in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 8, the Hall of Fame and the NFL announced Wednesday.

It's the first time the Cowboys will play in the league's opening preseason game since 1999. The Bengals last played in the game in 1988.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who had expressed a desire to be part of the festivities surrounding running back Emmitt Smith's Hall of Fame induction, called it an honor to be chosen.

"I really believe that having our players share in Emmitt Smith's Hall of Fame enshrinement should serve as an inspiration to every man on our roster, whether it be a ten-year vet or a rookie that's never played in an NFL game," Jones said in a statement.

With the Cowboys playing in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, it opens the door for them to possibly use two cities for training camp.

Cowboys officials have spoken with city officials in Oxnard, Calif., about the possibility of also having training camp there. The Cowboys have two years remaining on a five-year deal with the city of San Antonio, but they have held discussions with those city officials about splitting training camp between the two cities.

With the Cowboys playing in the preseason opener, it means they can open training camp earlier than most NFL teams.

Cool. I know it's only preseason, but it's an extra game I get to watch. I am not so sold on this two city training camp idea though.

Michael Irvin will not face criminal charges

The South Prosecutors have decided that they will not file any criminal charges against Michael Irvin, read here.

South Florida prosecutors said Wednesday they will not file rape charges against former Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin.
A woman filed a lawsuit Feb. 4 in Broward County Circuit Court seeking unspecified damages for a sexual assault that allegedly occurred July 4 or 5, 2007, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. The Broward State Attorney's office reported it would not file charges.

The incident was reported to Seminole tribal police on July 20, 2007, but the woman later signed a waiver of prosecution, according to tribe officials.

The Broward State Attorney's office was investigating the claims, but a spokesman said there was no physical evidence because the woman waited more than two weeks to report the incident.

Not surprising. Most of these details were already known and I guess they did a little more investigating and found nothing new.

This woman will not win this lawsuit against Irvin either. She has no proof and it's just her word against his.

Mardy Gilyard could be a top tier returner for Cowboys

He's lighting quick and he's a proven commodity as a returner.

The big question is whether or not he's big enough to handle being a WR on the NFL level. At 5'11, 171lbs he will not definitely not be running over any CB's or Safeties. We have seen guys like him excel recently though, example would be DeSean Jackson, so the Cowboys may surprise some and go after a player like this in the draft. Most fans don't feel the need to look for a WR in April, but his return skills add another dimension to his game that cannot be overlooked.

I also know there are some character concerns being talked about with him, read here. If that's all I am worried about is an arrest back in high school for some weed then I don't think it's a big deal at this point in time.

Right now his stock is looking like late first to second round. Depending on what he runs at the combine he may just be available to the Cowboys in the second round. If he's there at #59 the Cowboys should grab him.

There are some Cowboys fans out there who are totally against them going after Taylor Mays in the 2010 NFL Draft.

I think the #1 reason is they don't want another Roy Williams. They don't want another 'big' Safety who can't cover and who will be labeled an 'in the box Safety' by most experts. I get it. I can understand it and there are even days where I am in that club. But if the Cowboys are on the clock and Mays is still on the draft board I will not be shocked or disappointed if he's taken with that pick.

Let's first get one thing out in the open. This kid is a much better athlete than Roy Williams ever was or will be. Mays can run like a CB even if he is 235lbs. So I don't think many TE's or RB's will make him look bad in open space.

Whether or not he's a playmaker in defending the pass is another thing. Mays should not be used as a traditional Free or Strong Safety in the NFL. He's a unique combo of size and speed and he should be able to harass WR's/TE's and RB's all over the field. So I hope no one is thinking that Mays being drafted would mean he's replacing Ken Hamlin in the lineup.

If Mays is a Dallas Cowboy he would be replacing Gerald Sensabaugh and maybe even vying for the NIckel LB job in time.

Who knows. Maybe he is the guy who revolutionizes the position.

And whatever team does wind up drafting him is going to have to make sure they use his God given talents on the field.

I know a lot of you guys are looking to replace Hamlin before replacing Sensabaugh if they do draft a Safety. The Cowboys may not be thinking like this though. They already have guys on this team who are looking to challenge Hamlin this summer. Their names are Alan Ball and last season's draft pick Michael Hamlin.

There hasn't been much news on Sensabaugh as of late. He's a restricted FA and he's looking for a multiyear deal from the Cowboys. He was solid last season, but he did give up some TD's and he also had a few PI penalties as well.

I know I have said this a few times already but the Cowboys have a lot of information processing to do at the Safety position from here until the opening of the 2010 season. Should be interesting stuff.

Cowboys sign Boniol as kicking consultant

Sounds like the Cowboys are serious about turning David Beuhler into the FG kicker for the future, read here.

Boniol will help kicker David Buehler during the offseason and training camp. Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis said it has not been determined if Boniol will stick around once the regular season starts.

"Anytime you get a guy who has been in that situation as a pro, you take advantage of it," DeCamillis said. "He's made this like a career where he helps high school and college [kids] train at his camp. It's a good system."

DeCamillis said Boniol's work with Buehler does not mean he'll be kicking field goals when the season begins. Connor Hughes, who was signed to a reserve/futures contract on Feb. 1, could make the final roster if he beats out Buehler.

"I agree with it," Buehler said of bringing in Boniol. "The more set of eyes I can have watching me, that's better for me. It allows me to progress and become the field goal kicker I need to be."

So the Cowboys are trying to turn a kicker whom they drafted last season into a KICKER.

Whatever. Just find a kicker who can make everything that's under 50 yards.

After seeing what the Cowboys did with Chris Canty last season I don't think Spears should be surprised if he's allowed to go test the market. And if some team gives him a great deal the Cowboys will not overpay to keep him.

I think it depends on how other NFL teams view Spears. He can't play DE in a 4-3, but he may be able to play DT in that style if a team isn't looking to get much pass rush from that spot. There are some 34 teams who would definitely be interested in Spears if the price was right. But I don't expect any teams to give him a crazy deal like the Giants offered up to Canty a year ago. I still sit back and wonder what the hell the Giants were thinking on that one.

Still annoyed that he keeps trying to tell everyone that 34 DE's are not supposed to put up pressure numbers. In my opinion that's a cop out. If Jay Ratliff can put up great numbers in that area from the NT then it can be done from the DE spot. I know he's not going to lead the team in sacks, but it would be nice if every now and then he could beat a one on one block. Too many times Spears gets stone walled at the line by an average NFL lineman.

Spears thinks that he's better than he is and he does the same thing when he talks about the Cowboys across the board. Confidence is a great thing, but walking the walk is a lot different than talking the talk. From there you would definitely call Spears a 'Wade Guy'. Maybe that's why the Cowboys wind up keeping him with a fair market deal when it's all said and done.

Stephen Bowen, Jason Hatcher and Marcus Spears. Of those three I think Bowen is the guy I must have back in this defense. He is coming on and he gives the team a few dynamic plays here and there when he's on the field. It may be time to get him into the starting lineup and see if he can make some of those plays on first and second down.

He has a very valid gripe about the playing time, and it's clear he's griping, by saying 'no comment' there because he wound up being just as productive as Roy Williams last season. Crayton had 37 catches for 622 yards and 5TD's while Roy had 38 catches for 596 yards and 7 TD's.

Will that translate into a competition between him and Roy for the #2 WR spot when training camp rolls around?

Child please. I would wager Roy still thinks in many ways that he's going to be the #1 WR in Dallas for the 2010 season. Throw in Crayton's numbers as a punt returner (36 returns, 437 yards and 2 TD's) and it's clear he did more for the team last season.

Money. The Cowboys can't just go into next season with a guy who's making over $9 mil listed as their 3rd WR and feel like the rest of the league isn't laughing at them. Crayton knows he's getting the ****** end of the stick here, but he's a good soldier and he's willing to just go out and play.

Ben and Skin make a good point at the end of this interview to make it clear Crayton was having fun with this stuff. If you just read the transcript from this interview you could make a bigger deal about what Crayton said and maybe some places will do just that. This is the #1 reason I always like to provide audio/video on this blog so you can hear/see for yourself the players comments.

So it wasn't Brad Johnson as the mole? That was the rumor going on for about a year now. If the player wasn't on the team anymore I would have loved to hear Crayton out him publicly, but if he's still in that locker room then just let the matter rest.

Are the Cowboys targeting a Safety in round one?

Matt Mosley mentioned the other day that he was hearing the Cowboys are disappointed in Ken Hamlin and may be targeting a Safety in the first round of this year's draft as his eventual replacement, read here.

Jones didn't confirm this, but I've been told that the scouting department is taking a long look at the safety position with the No. 27 pick overall. The organization is disappointed in the play of Ken Hamlin and it's time to start looking for his eventual replacement. Alan Ball has looked good at times, but I'm not sure he's ready for full-time duty.

I think it's all about Alan Ball right now. If the coaches think he could handle the job then they might be willing to release Hamlin and let Ball have the job while they develop some kid whom they draft early this year.

Earl Thomas and Eric Berry will be gone by the 27th pick so if the Cowboys are going after them we are looking at trading up into the top 14 picks.

Last season a lot of people were looking at Taylor Mays as the best Safety prospect and he may just be a Dallas Cowboy when it's all said and done. Mays is a physical specimen but the knock on him is that he doesn't have enough dynamic plays on his resume to go along with all that natural talent.

Chad Jones is not a rangy Safety so I want no part of him.

Nate Allen fits the mold of what the Cowboys would want though. He's a center fielder who can play Free Safety in this defense.

Ratliff has turned into a great player and I think he's right about 2010 being the Cowboys time.

But that just means the window is now wide open and the team has to do enough to get themselves thru that window by playing as well as they did all next season as they did at the end of last season.

Is Marcus Spears definitely coming back to the Cowboys?

When the Cowboys didn't make any real offers to Marcus Spears on a new contract last season I thought he would have to come up big in 2009 to assure himself a spot for 2010. Did he do that?

Not really sure. He played ok and that's really what he's been throughout his career for the Cowboys. With the way the CBA deal is playing out Spears is a RFA so the Cowboys have first dibs on him and I wonder if they are thinking about letting him walk and giving guys like Stephen Bowen, Jason Hatcher and Marcus Dixon more time in the future.

I have to admit I was never a big fan of his and always thought he was just happy to be on the team. Last Spring he made some comments about trying to come into the 2009 season in the best shape of his career and of course it came across as if he was now willing to commit to the game so he could garner that big contract.

Those types of players are never favorites of mine. I like guys who are willing to work hard all the time no matter if it's a 'walk year' or not. Going to be interesting to see how his situation plays out.

Mark Schlereth and Marcellus Wiley talk about the Safety position for the Cowboys...

Gerald Sensabaugh wasn't an All Pro last season, but he was a key player in helping the Cowboys defense turn the corner and become an elite unit. So from there I think the Cowboys must bring him back to the team in 2010.

I just can't see the Cowboys paying Ken Hamlin $5.5 mil this season for what he does. He doesn't make enough dynamic plays. This whole deal with him being he QB of the defense is a bit overrated. I am sure the coaches would much rather have a guy who can pick off a few passes, force a few fumbles and knock down some passes as opposed to just being able to line guys up.

I know the Cowboys aren't in desperate need of a WR this season, but if Roy Williams is a washout again in 2010 then he's probably not coming back in 2011 and I think we can assume Sam Hurd is never going to be a starting caliber WR in the NFL.

This kid Mike Williams was looked at as a top tier guy before he got into some trouble back in November and left the team. He's not a burner, but he's just a guy who shows up as a playmaker when he's on the field.

With Miles Austin and Kevin Ogletree both progressing they give the Cowboys enough speed at the WR spot. It's not that Williams is a slowpoke or anything, but it will be interesting to see what he runs at the combine.

Just throwing out a name of a guy who may be around in rounds 3 or 4 who would be a steal at that spot because of his off the field stuff but looks to be a kid who produces on the field when he's given the chance.

If the Cowboys are serious about going after the future Left Tackle in this year's draft maybe they should look at trading up...

There are going to be some Tackles in the second and third round, but I would rather you go get the cream of the crop when talking about this position.

Mike Iupati. He's a Guard in my opinion. That stuff about him grabbing is not something you want to hear, but I would think in time it could be corrected with some good technical coaching.

Sources say Cowboys not interested in Choice for Cromartie

Last week we heard about some unsubstantiated rumors of the Chargers looking to trade Antonio Cromartie to the Cowboys for Tashard Choice. Then we heard just as many reports that this was just a made up rumor from a sports talk radio show in San Diego.

We are back talking about this subject because Chris Mortensen says he has sources saying the Chargers are indeed looking for a RB and Cromartie could be part of the deal, read here.

With LaDainian Tomlinson's career in San Diego declared all but over and Darren Sproles facing free agency, the Chargers are exploring possible trade scenarios that include dealing cornerback Antonio Cromartie to acquire a running back, according to league sources.

Among the teams that have running back depth are the Dallas Cowboys with Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice at the position. Several teams are looking for cornerback depth, including the Green Bay Packers, sources said.

The Chargers may be willing to trade Cromartie for a draft choice that could give them more flexibility to select at least one running back in this year's draft, sources said.

So of course the Cowboys are going to come up in these talks amongst the media because they do have three solid RB's and probably because Wade has history in San Diego with Cromartie.

The team is ready to move on from its 2006 first-round draft pick, and Cromartie has told people close to him he would like to be traded.

One source said the team talked with the Dallas Cowboys recently about a deal involving Cowboys running back Tashard Choice, though it was not known whether there were any other components involved in a potential deal. The Cowboys were not interested.

So that's where we are at right now.

The Chargers are looking to trade Cromartie and they approached the Cowboys but they were not interested in trading Tashard Choice.

Sounds good to me. Now let's see where this all goes next week, lol.

Cowboys will not franchise Miles Austin

The Cowboys have pretty much let the cat out of the bag that they won't be using the franchise tag on Miles Austin, read here.

There will be no franchise tag and possibly no long-term deal for breakout receiver Miles Austin, according to Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones.

While keeping Austin in Dallas is one of the team's top priorities of the off season, Jones shot down any thoughts of the Cowboys putting the franchise tag on the restricted free agent to help ensure he remains with the Cowboys.

A franchise tag would cost the Cowboys a $9.521 million salary for next year and require two first round picks as compensation if another team signed him to a long deal. However, Jones said there no reason to do that when the highest restricted free agent tender of $3.168 million with a first- and third-round draft pick compensation will do.

"We don't need to use the franchise tag," Jones said. "How many times have seen another team give up a one and a three?"

I guess Stephen Jones is banking on the idea that no other NFL team sees Miles as being worthy of a 1st and a 3rd round draft pick.

And he pretty much says what his father said yesterday by telling Hill that in any case he does not see the Cowboys letting him play anywhere else next season...

The strategy seems tenuous considering Austin's sensational season and the number of teams, including the Miami Dolphins and former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, looking for a No. 1 receiver.

But the Cowboys have the right to match any offer and Jones reiterated as owner Jerry Jones did on the radio on Tuesday that they don't plan on letting Austin go anywhere.

There is one thing that bothers me here. The Cowboys may be setting themselves up for a giving Miles a big deal that is not really on their terms if another team throws out some crazy deal.

All I ask is that the Cowboys don't screw this up by trying to avoid having all kinds of big money tied up at the WR spot because if that happens then it means Roy Williams and his salary would be the #1 reason Miles is gone.
