Witten not practicing, Ratliff talking defense

The chances of Jason Witten playing this Sunday are not looking good right now, read here.

Cowboys tight end Jason Witten says it hurts to even breath after suffering a fractured rib in the Tampa Bay game, and he sounded doubtful he would even try to practice here on Wednesday, saying he would probably “take it easy” on Wednesday.

“We’ll see today, I don’t know if I can practice or not, we’ll just try and see where we’re at, at the end of the week,” Witten said before the team heads out to practice later this afternoon. “Every time you breathe you feel it, I’ve never had anything like this before.”

There will be some suggesting Witten can wear a flak jacket or place a rib pad on the spot where his ribs is cracked, but as Witten says, “The damage already is done,” and while the padding might protect him from further damage, there is little the trainers can do other than, as he says, “doctor it up” to alleviate the pain.

And it was obvious while walking down the hallway with Witten the simple act of turning his head to talk, or any time he had to turn his torso was causing him some discomfort.

“We’ll just try to let it calm down a little bit and see if we can rally it up later in the week,” Witten said.

Witten is a warrior, but I don't think he's going to be able to play thru a cracked rib on Sunday. The Giants would be licking their chops about getting a nice shot on him when he catches a pass over the middle. It's time for Tony Curtis and Martellus Bennett to step up and can whatever they can to help the Cowboys beat the Giants.

Jay Ratliff was talking about the differences in the defense last week on his weekly appearance on KTBB.com...

Ratliff talks defense stepping up against Bucs

Zach Thomas is really the type of leader this defense needs right now and I am glad he stepped up to talk to the team. It was interesting to hear that it wasn't necessarily a 'rah rah' speech, but more of a let's all stick together and look at yourself and what you need to do.

I also love the fact that he says the defense was finally playing 'on the same page'. Now on one hand you say why aren't they doing that every week, but then on the other I say as long as they learned how to do it then let's just keep doing it for the rest of the season.

If this defense can play at that level against the Giants we might just have a shot even though there are a lot of guys down with injuries.
