Let's talk about 'Phase Two' folks!

Going into 'Phase 2' of the 2008 NFL Draft it was likely Jerry was going to be making moves up, down and all around looking for some value.

That's exactly what he did, read here.

The Cowboys started today with this ...

  • 2008 Third round pick -- 92nd overall
  • 2008 Fourth round pick -- 100th overall (from Miami)
  • 2008 Sixth round pick -- 167th overall (from Miami)

After the smoke cleared on five trades, this is what the Cowboys came out of the day with ...

  • Georgia Tech RB Tashard Choice (122nd overall)
  • Boise State CB Orlando Scandrick (143rd overall)
  • Middle Tennessee OLB/DE Erik Walden (167th overall)
  • 2009 Third-round pick (Browns)
  • 2009 Fourth-round pick (Lions)
So Jerry did an excellent job of picking up some ammo for next season while also adding three players.

Now let's talk about the players we added.

Tashard Choice - RB - Georgia Tech

This sounds weird, but I could see Choice being a guy who carries the football just as many times in a game as Felix Jones should MBIII be out of a game with an injury in 2008. With Choice you get an 'MBIII mini-me' who will take the handoff and work his way forward for 3-4 yards consistently. He's not going to be breaking a whole lot of 80 yard TD runs in the manner of a Felix Jones, but he could be very valuable if he's needed in a pinch.

Here's a good look at Choice..

Orlando Scandrick - CB - Boise State

Most likely a project who needs work to become a viable NFL CB, but he did show very good speed at the NFL combine by running a 4.32 40 yard dash. He may make the active roster in 2008 because he's a great special teams player though.

Here's more info from his NFL profile page, read here.

This video below makes me think at some point in 2008 he's gonna make a big play on Special Teams.

Erik Walden - OLB - Middle Tennessee State

This is one of those 'small school super athletes' we see come along every season. Now that's not to say he won't turn into something because the word is that he has a great first step which is exactly why Demarcus Ware is what he is. Worst case scenario is that we see him get a good 'look see' in training camp and then probably wind up on the Practice Squad for the 2008 season. Best case scenario is that he is so impressive he finds a way to get on the field for a few shots at getting to the QB during the season. Last season in college his numbers dropped because he was playing with a turf toe injury which should be good to go this year.

So for the day two haul we wind up snagging another RB who could be very valuable, another CB that can improve in time with some instruction on technique and an OLB who could turn into a prototypical 34 pass rushing OLB if he puts in some hard work with the coaching staff.
