Live 2008 NFL Draft Blog
I will be here all day updating this entry with the picks and thoughts. We are just about to begin and I can honestly say it's like a kid waking up on Christmas morning.
Here we go...
Dolphins - Jake Long - OT - Michigan
I thought this was a mistake, I would have taken Chris Long.
Rams - Chris Long - DE/LB - Virginia
Great pick, this kid is going to be very good for a very long time. He can create pressure on the edge and in the middle because of his size, speed and tenacity. Never stops working to make plays.
Falcons - Matt Ryan - QB - Boston College
Good pick because they need to get rid of the bad taste of Vick. Ryan become face of the franchise.
Raiders - Darren McFadden - RB - Arkansas
Hmmmm. Here's what I noticed, no one called him from the Raiders before the pick. Could he be traded? We'll see.
Chiefs - Glenn Dorsey - DT - LSU
The Chiefs hit gold here by having Dorsey fall to them. He was a man amongst boys at LSU and it be the same in the NFL.
Jets - Vernon Gholston - DE/LB - Ohio State
Jets get the pas rusher they need in the 3-4, but I am not so sure he can be that great at OLB. I sort of think he would be better off learning the NFL game as a 4-3 DE. He will not have 14 sacks next season in NY like he had last season at OSU.
Saints - Trade from Pats - Sedrick Ellis - DT - USC
The Saints needed defensive help and they got it big time. Ellis is a very good pick because he can stuff the run and get into the backfield to make plays behind the line of scrimmage.
Jags - Trade with Ravens - Derrick Harvey - DE - Florida
Wow. Jax gave up a lot for a pass rusher which they need, but I think they are betting this puts them over the edge. Very big chance they take with this pick.
Bengals - Keith Rivers - LB - USC
They needed some defense and the get the best LB in the draft.
Pats - Trade with Saints - Jarod Mayo - LB - Tennessee
That was a shocker. No one had him rated this high, most thought they were going CB.
Bills - Leodis McKelvin - CB - Troy
The best CB in the draft on most boards. Bills have to stop the Pats twice a year so this was a no brainer. They could have went WR, but the safe bet was CB and they will get a WR in second round.
Broncos - Ryan Clady - OL - Boise State
They needed a Left Tackle to block for Cutler and improve the runnning game. Reminds me of a young Jonathan Ogden/Orlando Pace.
Panthers - Jonathan Stewart - RB - Oregon
Well there goes the RB I wanted to pair up with MBIII. Panthers get a guy who can be a #1 back for them though.
Bears - Chris Wiliams - OL - Vanderbilt
Good pick for the Bears because they needed some help on an old OL. I guess they didn't take Mendenhall because they are not ready to admit that Benson is a bust just yet.
Chiefs - Trade for Lions - Branden Albert - OT - Virginia
Building a team from the middle out by getting Albert and Dorsey. Chiefs are winners here!
Cardinals - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - CB - Tennessee State
With Rolle moving to Safety they needed a CB to come in and be able to start at some point in 2008. They passed on Mendenhall though which may have been a mistake.
Lions - Trade with Chiefs - Gosder Cherilus - OT - Boston College
Another team passes on Mendenhall? Weird, the Lions are looking to solidify the O line but Cherilus was a reach for me in the teens.
Ravens - Trade with Texans - Joe Flacco - QB - Delaware
Ravens get the QB. A little high, but they needed to address the position and they did it.
Panthers - Trade with Eagles - Jeff Otah - OL - Pittsburgh
Holy trades Batman! Panthers get big help on O line and also got their RB. John Fox get's A+.
Bucs - Aqib Talib - CB - Kansas
Bucs get a CB which tells us they will not be getting Lito from Philly.
Falcons - Trade with Skins - Sam Baker - OT - USC
Definite reach here, but they needed a Tackle.
Cowboys - Felix Jones - RB - Arkansas
Great pick for the need at RB, but I wonder how they passed on Mendenhall. I think Felix definitely helps the offense from day and he brings the home run hitter to the Cowboys RB spot.
Steelers - Rashard Mendenhall - RB - Illinois
They go for the bigger power runner to team up with Fast Willie Parker. Good pick.
Titans - Chris Johnson - RB - East Carolina
Speed kills. The Titans didn't really need a RB though, I think they should have went WR.
Cowboys - Trade from Seahawks - Mike Jenkins - CB - South Florida
Jerry did it. He filled he two biggest needs on this team. The man is a genius!
Jaguars - Duane Brown - OL - Virginia Tech
Big offensive lineman who can sit a year and then start in 2009. The Jags are very good right now so at the end of the first round it's about helping out the future teams.
Chargers - Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona
This is why Jerry moved up to get his CB. The Chargers needed a 3rd CB to compete Paul Oliver.
Seahawks - Lawrence Jackson - DE - USC
Hawks get another pass rusher here. I thought they were going to look DT with Balmer.
49ers - Kentwan Balmer - DT - North Carolina
Run stuffer who can also penetrate on occasion and create havoc in the backfield.
Jets - Trade wth Pakers - Dustin Keller - TE - Purdue
Jets move back into the first round for a TE who could be a boom or bust. The Jets need offensive weapons so he fills a need.
Giants - Kenny Phillips - S - Miami
They needed a Safety and Phillips was the highest rated. Whether he can be as good as some of the other Safeties that came from the U is a still a question.

Easy throwing the Genius word around when referring to Jerry Jones.....
