What is Brett Maxie really doing in Dallas?
About a month ago it seemed the Cowboys had finalized the coaching staff after Reggie Herring was brought in to coach the LB's.
But then word came out the Cowboys were adding an 'extra' secondary coach in Brett Maxie. Well he's finally arrived in Dallas and started to help the Cowboys on Monday, read here.
The question I have is why did the Cowboys need an extra secondary coach this season?
We can all guess or throw out ideas, but I think this one makes the most sense. Dave Campo is actually the extra coach in my opinion. He was brought back here to specialize in getting Roy Williams to once again be the player who can at times dominate a football game. For whatever reason he hasn't been that player for at least two full seasons.
Maxie is here to coach the CB's. The Cowboys probably made a good move in having a guy handling that one position because we all think they are looking to bring in a few CB's from the upcoming draft. Plus we have a young guy in Alan Ball who they think has potential.
Back to Campo and Roy. When the Cowboys chose Roy in the 2002 draft Cowboys Nation was ecstatic and that continued for a few seasons. He was always making big plays and opposing offensive players were literally scared of him.
I think Jerry Jones still thinks that guy is in there somewhere and he wants Campo to find him.
In my opinion it's just too much work for one player. Roy Williams first and foremost needs to man up and start understanding that he is not playing on an elite level anymore. It seems to me like he is living off his reputation and he is ok with that.
Last season he was supposed to be playing more aggressive in Wade's 34 defense and we got just the opposite. How can we consider a player being aggressive on the field when he has 0 sacks, 0 tackles for losses and 0 forced fumbles? If he were playing with aggression he would surely have notched at least one of those things in his 15 games played.
Now this isn't to say I would not be very happy to see the 'old Roy' back out there lighting people up for the Cowboys defense, but if he doesn't then the Cowboys added an extra coach to the staff for nothing.
I know one thing. If Roy goes thru the entire 2008 season with zero's in those categories then Jerry has to part ways with him.
